Northern/7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu DVD Series

DVD titles from our Northern/Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu Series. Northern Praying Mantis (螳螂拳 or tánglángquán) is an 350+ year old elite style of Chinese kung fu originallly invented by founder Wang Lang in Shandong province, and is known in China as “the treasure that guards the mountain” as it was taught only to high-level Shaolin monks to protect the Shaolin Temple. Wang Lang, inspired by observations of the fighting behavior of a praying mantis insect, incorporated the mantis’ aggressive fighting style and speed into the art as well as elements from 17 other popular kung fu styles.

This 2-disc DVD set covers the Bong Bo (a.k.a. Beng Bu, Bung Bo) empty hand form, one of the most famous and well-known Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Tang Lang Quan/Tong Long Kuen) fighting forms. In this 2-disc DVD set, Wes Hardy (18-year system practitioner) and Sean Daily (10-year practitioner) take you step-by-step through Bong Bo’s various techniques, footwork, and handwork, and demonstrate practical, hands-on applications for each motion. Techniques and the entire form are shown at multiple speeds to allow viewers to understand subtle nuances and advanced concepts in addition to the basic motions.
This form’s techniques include a majority of the set of principles present in the original implementation of the style, developed by founder Wang Lang over 350 years ago. Nearly all styles of praying mantis kung fu in existence today include some version of Bong Bo, and the form has also been incorporated into the curriculum of many other kung fu styles and martial arts systems as well.
DVD Features Include:
- Thorough explanation of each motion w/hands-on applications
- Breakdown of individual motions shown at full, 1/2 and 1/4 speeds

Cha Chui Quan/Chop Choy Kuen (“Piercing Strike“) Hand Form
This 2-disc instructional DVD set from MartialSkill.com’s Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu Series covers the Cha Chui Quan (a.k.a. Cha Chuey or Tsaap Choy — in English, “Piercing Strike”) hand form, a core set of the Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Tang Lang Q’uan/Tong Long Kuen) fighting system.
Northern Praying Mantis boxing was originally derived from 17 different styles of martial arts said to have been brought to the Shaolin Temple over 350 years ago, including Emperor Taizu’s Longfist or Chang Quan boxing style. Cha Chui Quan, typically taught as a beginning or intermediate form, emphasizes motions that reflect the Longfist or Chang Quan influence within Northern Praying Mantis. As a Longfist-inspired form, Cha Chui showcases long-range attacking and techniques, including several techniques not found in most other mantis sets. It also showcases Praying Mantis’ famed hand speed and its ability to attack opponents even while moving backwards.
In this DVD, instructor Sean Daily along with Carlos Lopez and Pat Brown (all 10+ year mantis practitioners) take viewers step-by-step through the form’s various techniques, footwork, and handwork, and demonstrate practical hands-on applications for each motion. Techniques are shown at multiple speeds to allow viewers to understand subtle nuances in addition to the basic motions.
DVD Features Include:
- Instruction section including thorough explanations of each motion/technique
- Applications section including hands-on 2-person demonstrations of practical applications for every technique
- Breakdown of individual motions and full rows shown at multiple speeds
- Demonstration versions of form shown at multiple speeds
- DVD Bonus Material includes: Outtakes Reel
Lan Jie Quan (“Intercepting Fist“) Hand Form
This 2-disc instructional DVD video (containing nearly 4 hours of video content), from MartialSkill.com’s Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu Series, covers the Lan Jie Quan (aka Lahn Jeet or Lahn Dzeet — in English, “Intercepting Fist” or “Intercepting Boxing”) hand form, one of the original sets of the Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Tang Lang Quan/Tong Long Kuen) fighting system.
Lan Jie Quan, typically taught as an intermediate or advanced form, is considered by many mantis scholars to be one of the original or “mother” forms of the system developed by system founder Wang Lang over 350 years ago. The Lan Jie form contains within it all of the praying mantis systems’ original seven long and eight short attacks, and emphasizes trapping/intercepting motions in both the handwork and footwork that seek to interrupt an opponent’s flow and timing. The form employs advanced footwork, including double stepping motions that teach students effective “closing the gap” techniques and support the form’s timing-interruption techniques.
Bai Yuan Tou Tao/Baag Yune Tow Toe (“White Ape Steals Peach“) Hand Form
This DVD covers the Bai Yuan Tou Tao (a.k.a. Baag Yune Tow Toe) or “White Ape Steals the Peach” empty hand form, a popular routine in the Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Tang Lang Quan/Tong Long Kuen) fighting system. The White Ape Steals Peach form, usually taught as a beginning or intermediate form in most schools of Seven Star Praying Mantis, is a dynamic and powerful form characterized by flowing, powerful motions that combine hard and soft techniques.
The form was developed by Yu Hai, a famous traditional Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu practitioner. The Chinese government asked Yu Hai to create a mantis form that would become the standard Praying Mantis form for Modern Wushu. The result was the White Ape Steals the Peach form, which still maintains many traditional mantis roots, qualities, and techniques, due to Yu Hai’s many years of experience with traditional praying mantis. In this DVD, instructor Sean Daily and Carlos Lopez (both 10-year mantis practitioners) take viewers step-by-step through the form’s various techniques, footwork, and handwork, and demonstrate practical hands-on applications for each motion.
Praying Mantis Chain Styles Vol. 1
This instructional video contains a never-before available collection of some of the most effective chain styles or “chained fighting techniques” from the Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Tang Lang Quan/Tong Long Kuen) fighting system. Chain styles are an essential element in the study and mastery of praying mantis kung fu, and take mantis fighting theory and individual fighting techniques (including punching, kicking, throwing, and defensive techniques) and turn them into effective, applicable series of continuous motions.
Chain styles allow students to employ mantis fighting theories and principles in effective, usable combinations designed for maximum speed and effect. In this video, instructor Sean Daily along with Carlos Lopez and Pat Brown (all 10-year mantis practitioners) take viewers step-by-step through the various techniques, footwork, handwork, and practical hands-on applications for 12 different chain styles derived from northern praying mantis kung fu. Techniques are shown at multiple speeds to allow viewers to understand subtle nuances in addition to the basic motions.

Hi, we’re in Northern California. As far as a good starting DVD, I would say that Bong Bo would be a good place to start on the DVD side, or of course Level 1 on the MartialSkill University site (online courses). We do ship to Australia. Thanks for your interest.

Does the teaching dvd model fast or slow can learn to.
ninjas - July 17, 2012
Hi Loh, if I understood the question correctly: There are fast and slow speed clips on the DVD to make it easy to break down each movement shown. On most of the DVDs there is full speed, 1/2 speed, and 1/4 speed clips shown.
